Pome

Chat with whoever's nearby.

A chat room made of the people around you — the dorm floor, the bleachers, the campsite, row 23. Your phones link straight to each other, so it works where nothing else does. No servers. No accounts. No signal needed.

Free. iPhone and Android chat together.

What it does

A reversi match in a Pome room, mid-game
  • One lobby, whoever's around — open the app and the people in range are just there. Walk in, say hi, walk out.
  • Rooms — make one for the floor, the trip, or the team. A room lives exactly as long as someone's in it.
  • A real game shelf — chess, go, reversi, hearts, crazy eights, hide & seek with warmth radar, drawing telephone. Short a player? Deal in a house bot.
  • Make your own face — draw stickers and avatars in the built-in maker, or roll a critter and keep the one that looks like you.
  • Messages that hop — phones relay for each other, so the room reaches farther than any one radio.
  • Works in the dead zones — planes, basements, subways, festivals, the middle of nowhere. No bars, no problem.

Questions

How does it work with no internet?
Your phone connects directly to the phones around it over Bluetooth and local Wi-Fi, and messages hop phone-to-phone to reach the whole room. There's no server in the middle — the people nearby are the network.
Do I need an account?
No. The app deals you a name (you can change it), you pick a face, and you're in. Nothing to sign up for, nothing to verify, nothing to forget.
How far does it reach?
Room-scale to building-scale, depending on walls and radios — and every person in the room extends it, because their phone relays too.
iPhone and Android together?
Yes. It's one mesh — an iPhone lobby and an Android lobby are the same lobby, and the games play across.
